I love getting to know what matters to all women of all walks of life when they are planning their style. So I've asked a young mom I met via social media to share the most important factor when she makes a decision on what to wear. Here's what blogger mom, Erica Saville shared with VStylist.
You may have heard the old hip-hop adage, "if it don't make dollars, then it don't make sense." Similarly, when it comes to clothing choices for a nursing mom, if I can't breastfeed in it, then it doesn't make sense to wear (though that doesn't sound quite as dance-able). Functionality is the name of the game. Button down shirts give the easiest access to nurse my daughter, but a lady can only wear so many cozy flannels in a week before she starts to feel frumpy! Some moms utilize the two-shirt method, which involves wearing a nursing cami underneath their normal tops, but that presents two problems for me:
I only have two nursing camis, so for this I'd need to get a few more. If I'm going to buy more nursing camis, why not just buy tops that wouldn't require a second shirt with them?
It's still cumbersome and awkward having to pull up a shirt high enough to allow nursing access. Not to mention that this still isn't feasible when I want to wear a dress!
So I went on a search for cute, functional clothes for nursing moms. Luckily for me, that search did not take long. Tides seem to be changing in our maternal favor, and there are a decent amount of nursing-friendly options that are both stylish and allow for quick feeding when we're out and about. With options like pull-down, move-aside, and lift-up access, nursing clothes can be just as diverse in style and cut than any non-nursing selection. Adding a wide scarf can also offer a layer of covering if you desire to be modest while nursing.
The great thing about these nursing clothes is that they are first and foremost just clothes! Long after I'm done breastfeeding my daughter, these basic tops, scarves and dresses will still be wearable and don't scream that they are nursing clothes.
